Roundtable following Batoto Yetu Portugal’s guided tours of “Spaces of African Presence in Lisbon”. This initiative followed the recreation of Fado Dançado by the Batoto Yetu Portugal Association. Fado, whose origins in the Moorish quarters of Lisbon have as their embryonic words “Khado” (Moorish meaning “song”) and “Fatum” (Latin meaning fate/fatality). By the end of 1926, Fado was no longer danced but sung, becoming a symbol of national identity (today Intangible Heritage of Humanity). In this way, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of Portuguese culture, as well as to the dissemination of the importance of Angolan, Cape Verdean and Brazilian culture in the emergence and recognition of what is considered to be Portugal’s greatest intangible heritage. In fact, Fado emerged in Lisbon associated with dance in its most popular contexts, and in these guided tours we will visit spaces frequented by Portuguese of African origin, and references or images where this socialization took place.
