Mérita Fortes lived in Angola and Cape Verde before migrating to Portugal. She tells us about the racism she experienced at school in Portugal. Although she was always an excellent student, she was never recognized as a teacher. Today a member of the Theatre of the Oppressed, she was part of Guetto Platform and various other organizations. She is developing a literacy project for black women domestic workers.
This series of videos is the result of the research projects AFRO-PORT Afrodescendants in Portugal and Memorialist Discourses and the Making of History with the aim of recording oral memories about the history of colonialism and highlighting their importance in African and Portuguese history. The project brings together testimonies from Africans about Portugal before and after the Revolution of April 25, 1975. Issues such as reception, housing, work, residence and racism are addressed.
